The first filtering jugs appeared on the market almost 50 years ago, in the 1970s.Their presence has gained immense popularity on the market, becoming the equipment of everyday use in many homes for many years. What are they and what is the source of their success?
Jugs have a simple structure; the upper part (bowl) consists of a smaller tank for water before filtration, in which the filter cartridge is placed. The filtered water flows into a larger tank, which is of different capacity, from 2 up to 4 litters. Filtering jugs are made entirely of plastic, or of glass and plastic elements and are available in many colours and shapes to meet customer’s expectations, e.g. smaller jugs can be placed in the door of the refrigerator, those with a larger capacity are the best solution for households with a bigger number of household members. The filter cartridge containing activated carbon and an ion exchange resin is the heart of the device.
Tap water, which is supplied to our homes and apartments, usually overcomes many kilometres from water supply networks. In the pipes may be re-contaminated mechanically (e.g. with sand or sediments) or chemically (e.g. heavy metals such as lead or copper), even though it was thoroughly cleaned in water treatment stations. Therefore, to be sure that the water we drink or which we use to prepare food and beverages is clean and healthy, we should use additional filtering devices at home. For this purpose, you can use flow-through filters, mounted directly on the elements of the water supply network (pipes or taps), or just popular filtering jugs with a carbon cartridge. The filter stops all impurities (up to 0.5 microns) and makes the water not only clean, but also with a better taste and aroma. Thanks to the filtering, the water hardness level is also lowered, which means that no lime residue is settled, and no unpleasant and distasteful residue appears on drinks and in household appliances, where we use water. Chlorine and its derivatives, used to purify water in treatment stations, are completely eliminated.
